Of all the paintings I saw today at Versailles, this one, The Coronation of Napoleon, is one of my favorites. It stands at twenty feet by thirty feet, and commanded my attention as soon as I stepped into the room. The artist, Jacques-Louis David, was commissioned by Napoleon to record his coronation, the beginning of an extremely significant period in history, and I just really like David's interpretation of the historical moment; his focus on Josephine's crowning. The woman behind the man.
